| The influence of colour tends to be underestimated. But colour and light are both so constantly present in our everyday life. We tend to forget their presence and how they affect us, although it is common knowledge that colours influence moods and atmosphere. In our sea climate we tend to feel better on a sunny day than on a gloomy one.
Colours and light are a source of strength and energy, if we use them properly. With this information colour and light therapies are developed. Chromatics as used in colour therapy also apply to the use of gemstones and minerals.
When sunlight passes through a prism, we see six colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Because of the breaking-up of light in the prism, the white light is separated into its basic colours, each with its own wave length. In addition to this, sunlight contains several infra-red and ultra-violet colours which are invisible to the human eye.
The labradorite is one of the most magical stones, as the colours seem always to flow out from within, and every turn of the stone, every different angle, reveals new treasures. Turquoise, aqua, sea green and honey gold... sometimes you see a wood, sometimes the dark deep oceans, and at other times the clouds of approaching storms.
But where do the colours come from? Is it the tiny crystals in the stone itself which behave prismatically, or is it the colours of the stone itself? I'm not sure, but as we hold a piece of labradorite in our hand, we turn it slowly - watching the dragonfly flashes of gold and blue. |

| Naema, These stones or crystals are so beautiful! It's interesting that the blending of colors can represent the coming together of polarities and express love (oneness). When we look at a sunrise or a sunset we see the joining together of night and day, two polarities. Their colors merge. and we get the oranges, magentas, and purples. For me the magenta or purple especially seem to express a coming together of things. Love and peace. Thank you dear sister of light and color! |

| Dear Naema, this is a truly stunning post! And so invitingly presented. 'Dragonfly flashes' - yes! Your last-but-one photo even looks like a dragonfly's wing! And Joseph, you draw a very revealing parallel. When all come together, fuse into one, then the result is utmost purity. And the purple, yes. I recall that the togas of emperors (and only of emperors!) were dyed with the valuable tyrian dye - hence 'tyrian purple', denoting that rare and valuable colour. And is not the most pure of enlightened flames a purple (or violet) flame? |
