The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser

In May of 1828 a boy carrying a letter appeared in the town square of Nuremberg. The letter claimed that the boy had been held in incarceration without ever seeing the light of day, and that he now wished to be 'a cavalryman, like his father'. He gave his name as Kaspar Hauser. Kaspar's brief life ended five years later with his being stabbed by an unknown assailant. The events of his tragic life have never been unravelled, and claims to his identity - even ones linking him with German nobility - remain unconfirmed. Kaspar's own account of his life contains contradictions, inconsistencies, and apparent self-deception, and there are indications that his fatal wound was actually self-inflicted. His story seems durable because something in Kaspar's spirit seems to reflect each of us to ourselves in some way, and his assumed feral background confronts us - sometimes uncomfortably - with our own 'nature or nurture' selves. My painting of Kaspar is in the collection of the Kaspar Hauser Institute in Rotterdam.

Hawkwood

This is truly a masterful painting. It has such a rich texture to it. The man that is covering the boy's eyes with his gloved hand gives an enigmatic twist to the painting, and gives a sinister aura to the man as if he is trying to control or subjugate him. The boy must have generated a lot of interest to have an actual institute named after him.

This is a tough one to digest Hawkwood.
When I saw the movie, years ago, I remember I had a very uncomfortable feeling.
You have captured that feeling: enigmatic as Joseph says, but also a bit unsettling.

It is very well painted, but I cannot say I like the feeling, but of course, that is what it is about.
